Note: Participants must have access to a computer with built in audio (or a headset with a microphone and a strong internet connection. Google Chrome is the preferred browser for this workshop.

This workshop is designed for instructors new to Blackboard or anyone who would like a refresher course. We will address basic course navigation, then review course tools and procedures necessary to create new course content.

  • Utilize the course announcements feature.
  • Access student preview feature.
  • Make the course available.

Learning the Tools in Blackboard

Selecting the right tools is essential in creating a successful learning community.  In this workshop, participants will review several instructional tools available in the Blackboard Learning Management System that promote interaction and allow learners to demonstrate their knowledge. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Create assignments using the following tools: discussions, wikis, blogs, and journals.
  • Create groups.
  • Use rubrics to effectively communicate expectations and evaluate assignment submissions.

Workshop Title: Grade Center

This workshop will give participants an in-depth experience with the Grade Center in Blackboard Learn 9.1.  There will be interactive demonstrations of common tasks faculty perform in the Grade Center.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Create and manage columns to organize and calculate grades.
  • Display a final grade as a percentage or letter so that students can monitor their progress.
  • Use a weighted grading system.
  • Utilize special features, such as drop the lowest test grade.
  • Customize the Grade Center.

Professors have a repository of PowerPoint presentations that they’ve developed and presented on various topics in traditional educational settings.  This workshop will introduce tools and features available in Microsoft PowerPoint that will allow professors to transition those same PowerPoints into dynamic resources that will enhance the learning experience for learners in a non-traditional educational setting, specifically distance education.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Create accessible PowerPoint presentations.
  • Add audio/video to PowerPoint Presentations.
  • Convert PowerPoint(s) to a video file.
  • Apply captioning to a presentation.

Workshop Title: What’s the WORD on the Street?

Microsoft Word is a universal software application that has endless capabilities as an instructional tool. This workshop will introduce tools and features available in Microsoft Word that will allow participants to produce classroom aids such as: (1) simple infographics – present complex data or extensive content in a simple/condensed format using shapes, charts, pictures, tables and other tools available in Microsoft Word; and (2) content organizers – use Microsoft Word to create or guide students through the process of creating customized graphic organizers.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Create accessible Word documents.
  • Add text, charts, graphics & tables in a document.
  • Convert Word documents into a Portable Document Format (Fillable Forms).
  • Use built-in Microsoft online templates.

This three-part series demonstrates common tasks that faculty perform using the Blackboard Grade Center.
